Line 3 Pipeline Series

Magazine Cover / Illustration for Designers / September, 2021

Art Direction: Monica Brodovsky

Over the summer of 2021 I had been working with publications on editorials but wanted to confront a more pressing subject matter. After much research and reflection on Enbridge’s oil pipeline Line 3 crisis in Minnesota I decided that this resonated with me the most.

The focal point across all three of these covers is Enbridge’s oil pipeline Line 3. This pipeline is intended to replace a previously corroded and deteriorating pipeline that is no longer functional. The construction of this pipeline embarks on treaty territory of the Anishinaabe peoples in Minnesota. Of course, there has been extreme opposition against this project through peaceful protests, rallying, calls for aid from the government, etc. The installation of this pipeline will cause permanent damage to the surrounding wetlands and will be susceptible to leaking on a constant basis. Crossing 227 lakes and rivers, Line 3 is a direct attack on the land, climate, water, and community.

I wanted to visualize the betrayal of the US government going back on a multitude of treaties, display the realities of how peaceful protestors have been treated on the site, and present a grim glimpse into the future of what the the environment might look like if Line 3 is constructed.

I am saddened to hear that on September 29th of 2021, the construction of this pipeline in Minnesota is fully complete and oil will flow this Friday. If you would like to learn more I urge you to visit the nonprofit organization stopline3pipeline. The fight is never over, they continue to push against oil pipelines poisoning our land and so should we.
